Benefits of whey protein

The Board of Directors of Global Dairy Platform has focused on the benefits of whey protein – and how to communicate them – as one of its initial objectives. To do this, GDP needs a clear understanding of the science behind whey protein’s benefits. The European whey protein expert, Prof. Dr. Gertjan Schaafsma, is preparing a paper on this subject for consideration by the GDP Scientific and Communication Advisory Board, which will then make recommendations based on the scientific strengths of the benefits and advise GDP on the best channels to communicate them.

In particular, whey protein has the potential to promote muscle synthesis and create lean body mass, due to its high-quality protein composition and amino acids. These benefits are critical to athletes in training, but they also may help those losing muscle mass, such as adults with sarcopenia.

Some bio-active components of whey may offer additional health benefits, particularly for people under metabolic stress. Whey protein components provide positive effects of nutrient partitioning, enhance immune function, improve gastrointestinal health and supply antioxidant properties. Several successful clinical trials have documented the therapeutic benefits of whey protein for people diagnosed with particular types of cancer, HIV, hepatitis B, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

In addition, whey protein has been successful in weight management programmes. In particular, its effect on ingestion leads to reduced energy intake and subsequent weight loss.

Once the Scientific and Communication Advisory Board has recommended which of these advantages has sufficient scientific merit, GDP plans to involve member companies to create strategies to communicate whey protein’s benefits commercially.
