What’s the latest on trans fats?

About 30 experts from the dairy industry – representing academia and the corporate world – met in April in Amsterdam to review the current state of trans fatty acids (TFAs) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) in the areas of scientific research and the regulatory environment. The meeting was hosted by the Netherlands Dairy Association (NZO) and the European Dairy Association.

First, meeting participants provided an overview of current research, and identified areas where more studies are needed. Additional research will reinforce our messages when the dairy industry is ready to go public with health claims. Currently, the lack of data prevents the dairy industry from making health claims for TFAs. Animal studies show that CLAs have an anti-carcinogenic effect, and result in the reduction of body mass.

Based on the research data, next steps will focus on refining further research needs, as well as creating communication and policy strategies. Many of the meeting presentations will be published on www.NutritionMagazine.nl.
