But there have been surprisingly few attempts to quantify the benefits in economic terms. One such attempt was published in 2004 by medical scientists Dr. David McCarron and Dr. Robert Heaney. Since last April, Global Dairy Platform has been engaged in the strategy of maintaining/ increasing dairy food consumption by improving the health perceptions of milkfat. The first step in delivering a strategic plan was to conduct a baseline review of where we currently stand on dairy fat. Through this process, it became clear that a much more detailed review of the current science was required. Global Dairy Platform has been coordinating research into new marketing opportunities to capitalise on the benefits of whey protein. The project, led by Professor Dr. Gertjan Schaafsma, is seeking the most marketable scientific messages for whey protein. The positive messages – which are all backed by published scientific papers – are based on the strong essential amino acid content of whey and the availability of those amino acids. GDP has now identified a shortlist of six clear benefits. >read the full story | | Epidemiological studies indicate that a high intake of dairy foods or calcium is associated with lower body weight, body-mass index and body fat. Dairy food appears to have a more pronounced effect than calcium dietary supplements. Some studies have shown that dairy foods increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation in humans and may reduce appetite, while other trials have failed to confirm this.
